Restless (Mrs. George's Favorite Poem)

by Dorothy Bettencourt Elfstrom

Like a sea gull I ever am restless
As I travel the voyage of life;
My dreams are the wings that transport me
Away from the cares and the strife

Of the routinous things that grow boresome. (5)
My soul craves adventure - romance!
I thrill to the sound of great music;
My feet long to march and to dance.

Sometimes when the world bears down
Like a cage with iron bars, (10)
I gaze at the blue sky above me
and find freedom among the stars,

Or in the sweet song of the robin,
Or the waves of the onrushing sea;
somehow I feel kin to the ocean, (15)
It, too, seems restless like me.

My heart seeks the hearts of others,
My mind, greater knowledge of things;
And I'm thankful that I was born restless
With the thundering urge of wings. (20)
