Below are common questions associated with our reading assignment and answers which may help.

Q: What if I don't complete the summer reading assignment?

A: Well, you won't get detention or any sort of punishment, if that's what you're wondering. However, reading just ONE book over the summer and completing just ONE assignment will get you an ice cream reward in September as well as an added A+ to your average for the first quarter.

Q: What if I read more than one book?

A: We certainly hope that you will read more than just ONE book this summer. However, this reading program only requires ONE book and ONE assignment in order to be included in the party and to earn the A+.

Q: How will you (the teachers) know if I really read the book?

A: As the assignment page explains, the activities you choose are very specific and require you to think about particular elements in the beginning, middle, and end of your book. We are also asking a parent/guardian to sign a letter stating they know you read the book. You can click HERE and print the sheet from this website.

Q: When do I get my reward?

A: If you complete the requirements, plan on receiving it from your team teachers sometime in September.

Q: Where can I find the book I want to read?

A: You certainly may buy the book at a local or online bookstore, you may borrow it from a friend or sign it out from the Rotterdam Library. You should be able to get a copy of at least one book in time to read it before summer's end.

Q: What do I do if I'm a slow reader?

A: First of all, we feel there is enough time (8+ weeks) for the slowest reader to get through one of the books on the list. Also, we have provided books of varying reading difficulties, so be sure to read a book that fits your abilities.

Q: Can I read a book that's not on the list?

A: Sure, but it won't count towards the party or extra grade for the quarter. This year's list and assignment centers around a specific theme and the books we've assigned all deal with this topic.

Q: Can I read another book about my grade level's theme that's not on the list?

A: Not for credit. The list of books provided includes a variety of genres, characters, and interests. By reading the book descriptions you should be able to find a book that interests you. You can also go to sites like Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com to read reviews and kids' recommendations.

Q: Can I make suggestions for future summer reading programs at Schalmont Middle School?

A: Absolutely--we'd love it! We always appreciate helpful feedback from students, parents, and community members. Although we know that we'll never please everyone, we also realize that there are a lot of good ideas out there. To make suggestions simply click on the link below. Thanks!
